Who it’s for

For you if

  • You’re 18 or over
  • You’d like help managing your weight, whatever your starting point
  • Your weight is affecting your health, sleep, mood or how you move

Talk to someone else first if

  • You’re under 18: please see your GP
  • You’re pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding: talk to your midwife or GP
  • You have, or have had, an eating disorder: please talk to your GP. You can also call Beat’s helpline on 0808 801 0677

What happens at your consultation

  1. We measure, together

Your height, weight and waist, in private, so we start from real numbers. We’ll work out your BMI and talk about what it does and doesn’t tell you.

  2. We talk about you

Your health, any conditions and medicines, what you’ve tried before, and what you want to change. No lectures, and no judgement.

  3. We agree a plan

Practical changes to eating, activity and sleep that fit your life, with goals you set.

  4. Prescription treatment, only if it’s right for you

If a prescription medicine might be suitable, we’ll explain what’s involved, including side effects and costs. Any decision to prescribe is made by a qualified prescriber after a full assessment, and only when it’s safe and appropriate for you. Many people don’t need medicine.

  5. We keep in touch

Follow-up appointments to check how you’re getting on, adjust the plan, and keep you safe.

Check your BMI

Body mass index (BMI) is a starting point, not the whole picture. It doesn’t account for muscle, age or ethnicity. Nothing you enter here is sent anywhere.

For adults 18 and over. If you’re of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family background, health risks start at a lower BMI (23 for “overweight”, 27.5 for “obese”). Measuring your waist helps too: for most adults, a waist more than half your height is a sign to take action.

Free NHS support

  • The free NHS Weight Loss Plan app: a 12-week plan to help you eat better and be more active. Find it on the NHS website
  • If you have type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, you may be able to join the free NHS Digital Weight Management Programme. Ask your GP surgery.
  • Your GP can tell you about other local NHS weight management services.

We’re happy to talk these through at your consultation too.

What it costs

Weight management consultations are a private service. Call us on 01254 399898 for current prices. We’ll always tell you the cost of anything before you agree to it, and there’s no obligation to start any treatment.

Questions people ask

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Book directly with us.

Will you tell my GP?

We’ll ask your permission to let your GP know. For some treatments this is needed so your care is safe and joined up; we’ll explain why if so.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Your consultation is in our private room, and only the details needed for your care are recorded.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course. Bring a friend or family member if it helps.

What should I bring?

A list of any medicines you take, including ones you buy yourself, and any recent blood pressure or blood test results if you have them.
